What is a wiki?

A wiki is an online place where many people can work together and collect ideas together.

This video should help to explain:

YouTube: Wikis in Plain English.

This wiki is powered by DokuWiki. If you have used a wiki before, you should be fine. Otherwise, this page should point you in the right direction.

  • DokuWiki uses a wiki language to create the pages.
  • There's a helpful toolbar in the editor, making it much easier to write pages.
  • You can preview pages before saving them, which is really useful for checking that DokuWiki actually does what you expect it to do with what you've typed - especially when you're getting used to the syntax.
  • DokuWiki will autosave your edits as a draft every 30 seconds. If something goes wrong, you should be able to get your draft back again. Don't forget to save the page when you are finished though!
  • You can still write HTML for the pages if you prefer.

Adding new pages

This is the easiest way to add a new page to the wiki:

  1. Open an existing page (preferably the index of topics) and hit the “Edit this page” link.
  2. Add a link to the new page you would like to create (e.g. [[title of my new page]]).
  3. Save the page and you will see the link you added. The link will appear red, meaning the page doesn't exist yet.
  4. Follow the link to your new page and hit the “Create this page” link at the top.
  5. Do your stuff!
  6. Preview your page to check it looks good - we all make mistakes!
  7. Finally, save the page and you're done!
